A very reliable source just shared with me that there have already been some Model 3s delivered (not to customers) in the San Diego area. If I can get pics, will share.

So that would mean they would be starting to disseminate RCs we've seen spy shots of during the last couple of months, since SN1 is tomorrow, right?

Perhaps. The silver car seen at the Burbank showroom had MFG plates on it, not DLR plates, so that means it's an RC. I presume it's the same in San Diego. Perhaps Tesla is going to use the RCs in some showrooms until they can provide production cars for the showrooms.....which may take a while!

Created this new thread out of developing conversation elsewhere... Good idea, @DaGlot !

Also, I added a poll - as much as a personal challenge ... this is my first ! :p - as to add some light fun to the climate of the day! :D

Trev - what about test drive / demo units? Seems like a lot for crash tests although those tests seem more involved every year.

Of course the whole of M3OC would be delighted to give them temporary homes as demo units until the real thing arrives.
( .. and then I woke up...)

It's not generally done.

Besides, there are probably numerous tweaks being made based on the results of having built the RCs, so the RCs aren't quite representative of the finished product. I'd guess they'd want to use actual production cars for that purpose.

Preproduction cars cannot be legally sold to the public. They're generally destroyed, recycled and or used for crash testing.

I agree with Trevor and garsh, pre-production cars cannot be sold to anyone. The pre-production cars have MFG plates because they do not meet all the safety standards but are allowed on the road as test vehicles driven by authorized staff. At least, that is the law in California as I understand it.

I think the RC cars will be shown in the showrooms with no demo rides until the production models arrive and then the RC cars will be crushed.

So, I wish multiple answers were allowed in the poll (Michael you can create the poll with multiple answers) because I think two of those things will happen but not simultaneously. But two thumbs up for Michael for stepping into the brave new world of poll creation. You done good.

Exactly why I included (& voted for option 1). We are all keen to see, touch & feel the car; of course, most if not all of us would also like to drive it, yet that can be a second step.

Thanks, @ModFather! Trying to show you can show this 'old' dog new tricks... :D
I knew about the multiple choice option yet in this case elected not to use it to force a clearer outcome on the answer to this question.
Yet I fully concur the combo of temporary display until the 'real thing' is available followed by disposal in some fashion (I am 'crushed' to think of your suggestion :p) could be the winner!

I read a study years ago about recycling cars, new and used. It is more expensive to recycle a car than it is to crush it. That's why these test cars are crushed in some manner, whether it be in a crusher or collision testing (which wasn't an option in the poll).
