Okay, by signalling the end of the S3XY naming scheme, we are left to wonder what it WILL be called.
Ideas?

Remember, they have also stopped putting badges on their cars. So the name can something like "Of Course I Still Love You" (well, not that exactly, but you get my point).

My first ideas:
1. Homage to Monte Python: the Tesla Python, Tesla Circus
2. Homage to Douglas Adams: Tesla Beeblebrox, Tesla Zaphod, Tesla Dent (ha!), Tesla Trillian
3. Iain Banks The Culture: Tesla Phlebas, Tesla Sharp Blue, Tesla Snap

We all seem to be forgetting where the name Tesla comes from.

At this point S3XY is already imperfect. But I think Elon will be keen to stay away from more numerical models, since they've spent the last year trying to fight the perception of the Model 3 name. So, Model 4 seems crazy.

I think a real name is called for , not a number .

Inspirational , connected to Tesla and it's history , a serious name.

My opinion anyway, my bet I'll be right and Elon will move away from #s and letters

I missed it. What was the signal?
From the Q2 earnings call August 2:

[Elon] "Oh, and one thing I wanted to correct. I think in a prior call, we publicly had said that Model Y, or our compact SUV – it's called Model Y. It may or may not be – would be a totally new architecture. Upon the council of my executive team – thank you, thanks, guys – who reeled me back from the cliffs of insanity – much appreciated – the Model Y will in fact be using a substantial carryover from Model 3 in order to bring its market faster.
Yes. So that will really accelerate our ability to get to Model Y to market faster, because fundamentally people prefer a sedan, people prefer an SUV. And in fact, the SUV market is larger. It's the biggest single product (32:35) I believe in the world.
So, I'd like to thank my executive team for stopping me from being a fool, and yes. The Model Y, or whatever the hell, will have relatively low technical and production risk as a result. I still think we want to do the crazy thing in the future, but we will punt that until after the compact SUV.

I find 'crazy' a tad exaggerated, Y-loving 11thIndian... Though I see your point, I concur with @Audrey and others you may feel the same way that it remains a possibility... though none of us know what probability it has...
I would add that I did not hear for sure that Y is totally off the table... ;)

Kind of fun finding a couple of these older threads (but they already have the right topics) as we get closer to the model Y. Using much of the same underpinnings of the model 3, but with the AP3.0 (which we know is ready to go and mass production in 6 months) all this model really needs is a new frame and some sheet metal. They should be able to put this on a line in 12 months or less. I think the Model 3 name has worked well, so I don't know that I agree that they'll have to find a cool name for it as was once thought. I wouldn't be disappointed if they did, but don't feel they would have to.

I kind of like "Model Y", and I'm pretty sure I'm going to try to buy one. (I drove around in a Saturn SL2 for about ten years, so I'm pretty used to oddball names.)

I think it's way past time to start naming the cars more whimsically. I'm quite sure Elon wishes he had named cars like he names rockets and drone ships. The SEXY was limited from the start, and actually killed by Ford (S3XY rather than SEXY).

The next car should be the Trillian, or the Zaphod, or something like that. Just like spaceships being named Heart of Gold. That's how an engineer pays homage to an artist. If you've been paying attention, that's something Elon feels deeply. Time to get off the Boring precedent that S, X, and 3 have set.

The E/three bar logo in sexy was killed by Adidas. Are you referring to something else with Ford?

Of course, one can go too far with whimsical car names, as this tidbit of history illustrates: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psychology-yesterday/201311/how-the-edsel-got-its-name

"Utopian Turtletop", seriously? :)
