This is tough for me. But, having to look right and down to view my speed is really stupid. Is there any indication from anywhere that Tesla may make the speedo available in front of the driver?

This is truely my opinion. I myself wanted a HUD. It's not happening,so I will reserve judgement till the car gets here. I drive a Prius now and the gauge cluster is in the middle of the dash. No big deal looking over for a second. Heck, people take their eyes off the road for more than a few seconds just to look at their phones.

Like @Watts4me , I am definitely on the record for dying for a HUD... :D... and remain on my toes to find out soon why I won't care if there turns out to be indeed just the center 15''... ;)

@Gimme3 , allow me to recommend you to stay tuned, at least until the July launch and when you see/'feel' the car... And do try to find solace in knowing there are decent back up plans, as @TrevP and Teslanomics' Ben have tested for us recently...

Unless you really need the deposit back, it would be silly to cancel. Wait until you can take a test drive and then decide if it really matters.

My first reaction was that speedometer in the middle might be a problem, but enough members of M3OC have reported that they quickly adjusted to this sort of layout that I expect it will be fine.

Why cancel your reservation before you have even tried the car? If you need the money or you need a car right now, sure cancel. But if it is misgivings about the location of the instrumentation, wait until you can drive it. I expect we will see some initial demo cars in the showrooms in about three months. Try it, then decide if you like it or not. I currently drive a car with instrumentation in that general location and love it there. I don't need to drive a model 3 to know that this is going to be exactly what I have been waiting for.

The information is at +- 5'' right up the steering wheel. Easier than looking for the clock in the car, easygoing.;)

it depends when you made your reservation.
If you reserved 3/31, then you are completely insane to cancel now, less than a month from seeing the production car.
If you reserved last week, then again, you're insane for cancelling before seeing what the car will be like in 18 months time when you will be able to order it
Either way, cancelling until you get the opportunity to look and drive is basing it on a supposition and not facts or experience.

That said, if you reserved 3/31 and want to cancel, then hopefully it will get me closer to my car :D:D

I think if the lack of a traditional speedometer or HUD is an excellent reason to cancel your reservation.

The more people who bail out for whatever reason..the sooner the rest of us can get the vehicle.

How often anyone looks down at a speedometer as opposed to the slight right of center ...is a ridiculous complaint...he'll the mini coopers had a really central speedometer in the middle of the dash and they got critical acclaim for years...

So please cancel your reservation...

I respect your distaste for a lack of a traditional instrument panel ....and it's elimination should deliver a view of the road up close that rivals the rear mid engine Porsches suck as the Boxster or cayman as well as the rear engine 911...

That low front sight line is excellent...not having an instrument cluster should make it even better..

I'm excited for that as well as the very low center of gravity the floor mounted battery pack offers....

In second thought....this little sporty sedan model 3 tesla could be so awesome...take the unselfish advice given by other members here and go test drive the car before cancelling...

Now if you don't have the fifty or so thousand dollars for the tesla model 3...then just take delivery , get the 7500 dollar tax credit...the no sales tax offered in many states for electrics..., keep the car a year and sell it for what you paid for it...minus a grand or too..

You could be driving free for a year that way...

Besides ..aftermarket huds can be easily installed in any car for a couple of hundred bucks..

Think about what's best for you and not the rest of us chomping at the bit to take delivery..

Good luck and I hope you enjoyed the journey

I suppose you guys are right and I'll wait till I can test drive. I'm just one of those few people left who don't look at their phone, do their makeup, eat a sandwich, read a book, etc while driving. I love driving and when in the car, that's what I do. If
(hypothetically) I'm on a particular piece of road where I know that the car will do X speed around a particular curve and absolutely no more, I want the speedo in front of me.

Here is my $0.02 and of course we all have our own opinions and are welcome to them.

I rarely ever check my speedometer because I am more in tune with "feel" and "flow of traffic". The speedo is generally on the right center of the area in front of you (note I have heard @TrevP call this a "binnacle" :) ). Really think about it... the speedo is guaranteed to be in the upper left of the central screen and the screen is mounted fairly high. It's going to be about 6 inches to the right of what you're used to. Further, it's going to be digital and it's never going to be obstructed by your hands or the steering wheel. You probably spend more time looking at the speed since you have to find the needle and move out to the speed which is usually only displaying every 10 MPH anyway.

When Elon says, "you won't care", I take it at face value. I don't think it's cryptic. I don't think the car will drive me (we're just not there yet in the affordable mass market). I think he means it's not a big deal at all to move it 6 inches over.

If my eyes are off the road that's bad. What's the difference in what direction (down or down and slightly right). It should be a quick glance at a safe time and nothing more.

Further to the point, there is nothing left for the driver to see constantly in front of them. It's a waste.

Last point, unless you're cash strapped -- and if so don't get the car anyway, don't give up your deposit until it becomes non-refundable.

For me it's that more about how it 'feels' than what the speedometer says. On a curvy road, I could pass one sign that posts the upcoming corner at 40mph and I don't need to slow down (from say 50) at all. And others that I may feel more comfortable at 35 than their posted 40.

I don't buy needing to look at a speedo to know if your going the fastest speed.
Feel is paramount here not what the speedo says.
Road conditions are felt not instrumented and it's road consisting that dictate corner speed.
For everything else get an app the gives you telemetry

There I go, replying to the wrong person again :) (mod fixed)

So you've got two choices, accept it or refuse it! For me the big thing, will be to drive back the Odyssey looking for the 15'' screen...

As someone who also loves driving, the relative location of my speedometer just doesn't even register as a concern. Just practice in your own car. Your eyes glancing slightly to the right vs looking slightly down is an equivalent action for all intents and purposes. Honestly, in the image below (which has the best perspective I've seen for evaluating it), the speed appears to be closer to the road than a traditional cluster.

It's just a matter of darting your eyes to the right and down a tad vs down only. The time your eyes are off the road is no different. Many old cars had the speedo in the center.
It continues to amaze how much you guys focus this & related exchanges on other threads on the speedo... when there is so much more that is - or can be - in front of your eyes while driving, therefore giving you many more reasons to take your eyes of the road...

I know my answer... :D
