The Trunk

I wasn't expecting the 3 to have a trunk, I was expecting a hatch. Not a fan of trunks in general and not sure why Tesla went that route. I would have preferred it to be another hatchback like my S.

Any theories on why they didnt go with the hatchback while looking like a hatchback?

I was expecting a hatchback too like the Model S. Car design is all about compromises.

Judging from the size of the glass and where it meets the top, they couldn't have it hinge so high up on the car and let the hatchback go up very far so it had to be a trunk. I'm not a mechanical engineer but I can see things clearly when you look at how they did it.

I agree that hatchbacks are ideal. They help make a small car feel big, especially for carrying stuff, but I think TrevP is right that with the continuous glass roof (which is pretty sweet) theres nowhere to hinge it. In any event, I wonder if a hatch version may come later. There's been lot of speculation on the web about multiple versions of the 3.

Tesla is also reportedly working on a CUV called Model Y. However we won't see that for at least another year. Maybe that car will have a different rear opening. For now we have a trunk so we'll have to just get used to it. It's not so bad, that glass is going to be a real stunner.

The Model S is petty much continuous glass (if you got the Panoramic sunroof) so I'm not sure the inability to hinge would be the reason. I can believe cheaper parts etc.

@1970Gizmo is correct. Use of steel in the roof however isn't a factor as a solid roof will be an option but only in the smaller pano section between the first and second cross members. It's the elimination of a headliner and insulation in the back window that gives it more headroom

Yes.....in a reveal video it was stated that they initially looked at a 'hatchback' version and wanted to go that route however the design made the 'hatchback portion of the roof quote "too big/large" to be practical and then showed the Birdseye above rear view. If you think of the shear size and enormity of that Panoramic glass roof in a hatchback version it would be enormous, especially when raised or open.

Opening seems pretty big to me. I think the angles of the videos at the reveal don't do the car justice. Elon also confirmed they will make the opening wider and taller too.


What you can't see in the picture is the deep well just inside the trunk for storage. Model S and X have this. Imagine if you removed the spare tire and gas tank in the car and lined it with carpet. That's the extra storage space you get...

Well according to Musk's tweet, they couldn't have a hatchback because they had to move the rear roof cross-car support beam to accommodate for more passenger headroom. Seems to be still pretty roomy though and addresses my main concern of transporting a bike.

I will be an owner - if I can order a wagon or at least a hatch. I will not compromise my requirement of one car for all needs. Tesla will get there eventually, just disappointed that the first affordable model is a sedan... My trusty Subie wagon will just have to last a few years longer.

I have always preferred the sedan look to the hatchback look but the S looks like a sedan even though it can be called a hatchback and functions like one in most regards. Since I like the sedans I have always had the trunk and don't really have any complaints with a trunk, in fact had the Ford Crown Vic for years and that was a monster sized trunk. With the Model 3 deep well it should compete quite nicely and except for the really awkward and bulky items hold most things well.

I have been driving a GTI GLX for 15 yrs and love it. Not only is it fast and fun to drive, but the hatch and drop seats make that car incredibly practical and useful. I too was hoping for a hatch, but I have to say the Model 3 looks incredible as-is and will definitely be buying one. Maybe one day Telsa will release a hot-hatch and then I'll have a reason to buy a second Tesla!

The trunk seems enormous to me, maybe because I'm used to this trunk that is mostly filled with a gas tank

On the Model S, the "frunk" is very capacious, if the car does not have the front motor; otherwise, it is less so.
I think that concerns about rear space in the Model 3 for storage will correlate to whether or not an elects for both the rear and front motors.

They could not add the hinge for a hatch without compromising the single pane of glass for the roof/back window. I personally dig the trunk and think the single pane of glass is spectacular. Just my opinion... :)
