My final question for Tesla in preparation for delivery was to let them know that I wanted to transfer my license plate with the transaction so that they could be prepared in advance with the paperwork.

That was met with a “we no longer do that”.

Well that’s a shame! That means you incur extra cost and aggravation of going to the DMV/Tag Agency to get it done.

I had to do it myself in June. They are so understaffed I can understand them deferring this until deliveries go more smoothly. I'd rather everyone get their cars faster and we do our own extra paperwork but this is not the level of service that you would expect from a luxury car company.

I did it today at the DMV (swapped personalized plates to Model 3 and got new plates and stickers for old car). Made an appointment and was in and out in 30 minutes. It was only that long because the appointment line had 15-20 people in it when I arrived...

We Texas people have to stand in line to pay sales tax and register the vehicle. Funzies. That was a painful check to write when we got our Model S. Yikes!

Did you have pay cash for the car? They wouldn't add the taxes to the sales price at financing? That has always been done at purchase time anytime I bought a new car in TX.

I think it’s because of a restriction on Tesla car sales in Texas specifically.

Ah thanks. Forgot that tidbit. I need to go start reading up on that small fact to see an remember how this txn will work. Have always just added it all up including taxes minus down payment etc and financed. May just have to pay some of that separate - will just plan on the fed tax rebate to offset that later I guess.

Just ordered a custom plate for the 3 - Texas uses Myplates.com for specialty plates. Something cool they have there and should work out well is a layaway plan they offer if you buy a multiyear specialty plate. You can pay it off in 5 months. So doing that should give us time to get the car in before taking ownership of the plate. Won't have to worry about a transfer. I had already estimated we'd have it by June 1 at the latest, now it's May 30 so I don't have to take ownership of the plate for a current car and then transfer it.

That's a shame. I feel like if Tesla is trying to disrupt the dealership model, the buying process should be a turnkey operation, not me having to piecemeal each part of the transaction myself.

I don't disagree, but in TX we can't buy direct anyway. At least that is the way it once was. There is a well documented process of how we have to buy in TX and I've got to get up to speed on it. I can understand not making any more difficult for us or them. If you are in a state where you can buy direct, it is a shame they don't just make it much easier and include it. They are just trying to keep their model clean and straight forward.

I think there is some legality issue. If Tesla can't see a car to you directly in Texas, they also can't collect Texas sales tax because it's not legal for them to sell it to you. On the flip side, if you buy something from amazon and they ship it to you then Amazon can still collect sales tax for the state you live in but then again it's legal for Amazon to sell it to you. Technicalities....sheesh....

i believe Tesla is conserving resources and trying to push out cars as quickly as possible. When I gave them my trade, I they mailed me the plates back so I could surrender them to the DMV. I may be mistaken but I would have thought that the dealer normally does that? Regardless, if doing my own plate transfer helps more people get their cars sooner, I am willing to help the cause.

Tesla is allowed to have only 5 stores in New York but they are allowed to sell so I was able to pay taxes at the time of sale and bundle it into my loan if I wanted to.

That's Texas' fault (and their dealer lobby), not Tesla's.

And I started the thread and I’m in Florida :)

It’s definitely all part of streamlining the process. Just the same as having you work with someone in Las Vegas rather than the local team.

So what exactly is the process then? They give you a temp tag and then you transfer it over yourself? I am looking to do a trade-in so just trying to figure out what I am in store for.

Out of curiosity I called the local delivery location and asked to confirm what my sales specialist from Las Vegas indicated re: no plate transfers.

She said that’s not true at all and they absolutely do them.

I asked if she needed anything from me to make the process easier and she just asked for the plate number.

She also confirmed my car arrived and is ready for Wednesday’s delivery!

Well that is good news! Thanks for following up.

Just waiting for them to send the non-owner invites out. I assume we will get a better idea of when that is after the Q4 call on Wednesday.

Hope everything is good with your car at delivery!
