OK, I know I'm jumping the gun here but I was curious about current owners and their need (or not need) for a Tesla extended service plan. Those of you that are current owners, did you purchase a plan? Do you think it is worth it? It does appear to save you about $400 over a four year period over the individual annual inspection costs ($800 if you go with the 8 year plan). I do plan on keeping my Model 3 for a LONG time. One question I had was if the 8 year plan would cover a repair once the car is out of normal warrantee?

Any info would be most helpful. Thanks

It's a great question I was wondering myself. I don't think there is too much to maintain on electric car. Wouldn't Tesla know if there's anything wrong with the car before you do?
Model 3 is designed to be less complicated so hopefully less problems and less visits to the Tesla service centre.
I think that's Elon's vision to have car that has no problems.
But time will tell.

I think that's Elon's vision to have car that has no problems.
But time will tell.

Skip most of the vid. I'm not sure how people get into these vlogs. Other than the issues with the car, the rest of the video doesn't interest me. Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time with that vid.

This one is a bit unnerving.
I saw this one too. He goes on to mention that when he called the service center he was told that he had a "Generation 1" ECU (his is a first year Model 3). It ended up being an internal short in the unit. The service center said that this problem had been addressed in later versions of the car but since he was out of warrantee he would have to pick up the cost of repair. I think he said it was 550 pounds (he is in England). While not thrilled that he had the issue, the owner understood that it was his responsibility. This is the type of expense I would hope to avoid by an extended warrantee. Especially since our cars will be generation 1 Model 3s.

The guy in that particular video (I watch him a fair bit) bought a very early Model S. His door handle is having issues now but it's generation 1 of the popout handles. I like his videos but hes getting on my nerves a tad lately. Watch the new video where he calls Tesla and really lays into them for the cost of fixing his handle. I get he's quoted a big price but he could get them to check it and officially quote him rather then jump the gun. Plus its a luxury car! If you're spending 100 grand on a car you should probably have 10 grand set aside for repairs. While EVs need less maintenance it doesn't mean they're impervious to repairs and issues.

Honestly the service package is probably worth it. Provided you've got the time to go in once a year. Just to get the car inspected and things lubricated and all that. While there is a lot less maintenance a big part of a warranty is getting the car looked at so they can fix things before it escalates into a big issue. If I can afford it I'll prepay it for a full 4-8 years for sure.

Indeed, he does have a tendency to go 'off topic' quite a bit... (though the section about his kid dancing to the X Easter egg in the store was priceless... :D while, again, a bit too long!) plus daily input can get overbearing... ;)

OK, but as far as I can tell, the service plan you can prepay does NOT cover warrantee parts and labor, just annual service visits. What I am wondering is if I pay $4000 for the 8 year service plan and something goes belly up in year 6 when I have 80,000 miles on the car will it be covered?

I've been watching his Vlog too. I saw the comments in youtube to look at the video to take apart the door handle and replace the switches... Guess we will find out more today. There still are things that people can fix themselves.

As I understand it, it's prepaid annual servicing not an extended warranty. Not sure Tesla offers an extended warranty.

Model S is an expensive car so parts are going to be dear for it. I was considering a CPO but only it it had the full 4 year 80K Km warranty.

For the most part yes the CPOs came with a 4 year extended warranty regardless of then miles on the car.

They did have some pretty cheap but as-is without a warranty. That's a dangerous proposition given the costs of parts or the battery.

I've never seen Tesla offer an extended warranty. Makes sense, they're iterating on the car constantly. Don't want to keep 8yr old parts in stock that may have been improved 4 or 5 times over in that period. Its really just prepaying for annual service where they look the car over and run some diagnostics on it, replace some fluids etc.

I like daily vloggers (was really into Casey Neistat but he had an exciting life :p). James does confuse me. Seems to have a beautiful house. He has a Model S, his wife has some sort of a Mercedes. Not sure why 550 pounds was breaking the bank. Seems like bad planning.

There isn't enough time in the day to watch someone else's life pass them by lol. I try and skip to the interesting part - usually the reason for watching the video to begin with. My life is far too exciting ;)

You gotta admit, nearly $700 does seem a bit extreme for a door handle. But, this does represent my concern for having a first generation car covered for these type of things that will inevitably come up. Granted, for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles you're good...after that it could get seriously expensive. Just trying to get a handle on this.
