Elon Musk made a playful comment at the 2017 shareholders meeting that Tesla might have some updates to share at the Semi truck unveil event in September. Admittedly, this will be a short-lived thread, until we all find out what the secret is. Guesses welcome!

If you pick 'Other', could you please post your guesses in the thread as to what you think it might be? Thanks!

I think it could be Model Y, but then again that probably warrants its own event.

Most likely Supercharge V2

May be Tesla Bus - If they are making Semi, why can't they get into mass urban transport? I know Elon said that it does not make sense to have a transport with driver when it can self drive but with other companies getting in BEV bus they might as well.

I think supercharging update news. Has to happen to charge a Truck quick enough for it to be viable. Having said that, dont drivers need to take a sleep break? can the battery charging be planned to happen at the same time I wonder...

What would be awesome is if it all comes together with an announcement that....

A prototype Semi-Truck, revealed live, will leave a parking lot in California and begin fully self driving itself towards New York..... carrying a full load of M3s to be delivered to people on the East Coast.

Similar to KirbyTurbo's guess, I think it'll be the "launch" event for the cross country autonomous drive but I'm thinking it'll be a live event.

I also think they'll be using the semi for Model 3 deliveries or, at least, battery transfers from Sparks to Fremont. Might really surprise and do that (or even cross country deliveries) with full autonomy but very skeptical considering other industry pressures.

I think it will have to be some significant new concept in charging infrastructure, "super charger improvements" would be to put it lightly, but on a whole other level. These trucks need a lot of power and certainly can't use the existing network. Combined with some new automation concept, it will combine to be one of those "Aha!" "I never thought of that" moments...

My prediction is they will announce that every semi trailer truck will be partitioned into two self-contained powertrains rather than the current way of a massive single engine pulling the trailer.

Tractor bit - This can be made lightweight for the sole purpose of carrying driver and it will have a battery capacity on par with a car. They will be "wired" together, the semi-trailer bit will "follow" but will not be pulling the trailer - just guiding its route - ultra responsive electric drivetrain(s) will make this possible. Eventually, the tractor will not be required when level 5 autonomy is reached.

Semi-Trailer bit - This will be a self sufficient haulage platform by its own with a huge battery and efficient yet powerful drivetrain. It will be left at the destination to charge overnight, a new trailer picked up for return journey. Eventually when we reach level 5 autonomy, we will see these haulage platforms carrying loads on their own without a driver or front truck part. Since we are talking about long distances and heavy loads, these will have massive batteries stretching end to end. It is also possible these semi-trailers will support very high charge rates and will connect/disconnect external charge-point automatically.

@Jayc it sounds funny at first but I think you're on to something there.

Think of international shipping containers. Standard boxes used on ALL boats around the world, and often moved onto a trailer to the destination.
Tesla would be VERY smart to design around these. A flat trailer full of batteries that accepts ISCs. A very simple and relatively inexpensive cab at the front with motors and steering wheels, and a (temporary) seat.
