So I just called the local Tesla SC and told them I do not yet have a VIN nor have I configured yet as I’m awaiting the call for AWD. I told her I know I can order an HPWC online however I’d like to just pick one up at the SC if possible. She said well....not really if you do not atleast have a VIN assigned as they don’t to “open ticket items” OTC for the chargers without a VIN and that I could just order online if I have an account which I do as a reservation holder. (I know some have done this and had the sales rep just input an”fake” VIN to override the system. I talked directly to parts and apparently they weren’t privy to that though maybe I should have suggested it to see what she said, though didn’t).
She said it would probably be quicker ordering online anyway however if I had any issues with the charger that “I’d have to go through the ‘online process’ to get it taken care of”? First off has anyone dealt with this or have knowledge of what she’s referring to? My first thought even though I’d like it installed early is wow....maybe it’s better to wait until I have a VIN and then pick one up at the SC and then have it installed...that way if I have any issues which a failed unit I can exchange it directly at the store? I don’t know what she was referring to.
Secondly for those of you you who have had either HPWC issues or failures how do you go about getting it repaired? Contact the electrician who installed it? If it’s a total HPWC how is it exchanged with Tesla for a replacement? What I’d the warranty on these if any?
I’d like to pick one up and have my electrician install it as I’m doing a basement finishing project and the breaker room is there adjacent to the garage.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Ski

same for when I got mine. Thought I could pick one up locally, so called the Ptld service center and they confirmed they had them in stock. Drove down and after various employees checked around for nearly an hour they confirmed they could not sell one to a non-owner individual without a VIN. Ordered on-line, paid something near $30 in shipping, and it was here a couple days later.
at that time (end of 2016), the service center staff was also saying "it was not a sure thing the 3 would use the same connector". I told them they were crazy to think it would change with all the superchargers and existing destination chargers out there. and they were still, ok - but you probably will be stuck with something that will not work.

PS- it is just a WC, not HPWC any more ;)

Where did you order from that charged shipping? The Tesla online store I think does not charge anything for shipping? That is where I got mine... (I am in Portland and am expecting my Model 3 any day now...) I installed the Wall Connector AND a NEMA 14-50 myself (just as backup).

@eprosenx,

I just pulled the trigger on it afew hours ago and yes....they charged me the $30 shipping as well. So $530 OTD for the unit. Hopefully it arrives in afew Days so I can get it installed. I’m not on the west coast like at believe @MelindaV is. I’m almost an “east coaster”. So I wanted to pick up the cable organizer as well for $25 and tried different combos in the shopping cart (combined/individually etc) to see if it would change the pricing and shipping and it didn’t. They wanted $1.50 shipping I think on the cable organizer, or $26.50 however it had that caveat of “this unit could take up to 4 weeks to fulfil” so I didn’t want my WC to be delayed and just separated the two orders with their own order numbers in the hopes the cable organizer caveat wouldn’t delay my Wall Charger being shipped if they were grouped on the same order.

Great idea on the Nema 14-50 as a backup if the WC goes down for any reason and needs service. I’m planning on the same set up. Did you pigtail off of the same cabling as the WC or run separate conduit?

That is so weird. I ordered a Wall Connector and several charging adapters for the UMC on April 26th and none of it had shipping costs. Then I ordered some more adapters in two separate orders (last order was a couple days ago) and none of them had shipping costs either.

I originally bought the parts to do a NEMA 14-50 as the quickest thing I could do to charge the car (when I thought it might just be days from order to delivery a couple months ago), but then I changed my mind and bought a Wall Connector which I installed on the outside of my house. Since I already had the parts I went ahead and installed the 14-50 inside the garage (surface mount) so I could test the UMC if needed, have a backup charging option, charge the car inside if i wanted, and be able to offer it to a friend if they came over with an EV...

I installed a 60a circuit for my Wall Connector and a separate one for the NEMA 14-50. I don't think code would allow for both on a single branch circuit even if the Wall Connector was limited to 50 (well 40 after derate) amps.

Tesla.com/shop ;)
Maybe because you are on the brink of getting your car, being an owner (or possessing a VIN) gets you free shipping?

I don't understand your focus on hardware failure. In my experience, failure of high-quality electrical components like this is VERY unusual. The only moving parts are the little dip switches and pcb rotary switch your electrician will set to an amperage level suitable for the installed wiring. In the rare event there was defective hardware, you could just put in back in the box and ship it back to Tesla for a replacement. But that is so unlikely I wouldn't waste any sleep over it. UPS will ship it right to your door.

By far your biggest concern should be that it is installed by a non-bonehead. Because most problems, by far, are the result of boneheaded moves.

@PNWmisty,

Well.....to Start with if you’d kindly re-read my OP it’s not “My Focus” on hardware failure. I never called Tesla asking about hardware failures and problems. As my post says....the SC specialist or person I spoke with.....SHE said and I quote “Well I will tell you this....if you have any problems with your Wall Charger if you buy it online, you will have to go through the online process to have it remedied or taken care of....and I just thought you should know that”.
Now then.....my follow up question based on HER comments not MINE were has anyone dealt with any hardware issues and how did they get them addressed of they purchased the Wall Charger online. That’s all I was asking.

Regards,

Ski

Mine was shipped to Oregon, so no sales tax.
