There is a lot talk about home charging, yet many people live in urban areas (like me), who are not able to plug their ev in at home. The new urban superchargers can be one solution for that, but I find these ideas more intriguing:

There is a pilot project in my hometown called "Laternenparken" (=street light parking). A company in Leipzig is manufacturing street lamps with integrated ev-chargers. Their first site is quite close to my home, but has some limitations, like 4h parking limit, type 2 and a lot of trees that are popular with a local gang of pooing birds ;)

The other one is currently deployed in two boroughs of London. I like that the chargers can be retrofitted to older street lamps, using electricity liberated by LEDs. But the current fees seem to be a little expensive.

Many of my urban-living coworkers believe that everyone should either walk, bike, or take public transportation everywhere instead of owning a car. Sure, if you can make that work, it will save you a lot of money. But many of us enjoy the freedom that car ownership provides.

These are all interesting solutions, but none are ideal. When self-driving becomes reality, another solution might be to send your car by itself to some supercharger location. It will fill itself up, then park in a lot nearby, ready to come pick you up the next morning. :)

Interesting topic. My boss has a reservation and just yesterday told me he thinks he’ll have to pass.

I asked why and he said charging is going to be a challenge. He’s a renter currently (splits time between 2 cities) and he’s down in South Beach in a condo. As a renter he can’t (and wouldn’t want to anyway) install a fixture for charging.
