I would think Sept/Oct. After suitable work finishing and prototyping the final design, but at the start of car-buying season. Totally just a guess/wish. Partly based on when the design's supposed to be done, and the need to stay in the news and support keeping/increasing the order backlog. I think they'll also need to have pricing solid by then, which will require a lot of planning and estimating, perhaps much of which is already done. Dunno.

I would wager that we will see it sometime late this year. Tesla is going to need to keep people interested as otherwise they will start going with Plan B. It is also highly expected that the other manufacturers will be announcing their 200+ mile EV's late this year also. Ford is rumored as reported by C&D to be working on one so that interests me since I love Fords.

Elon basically confirmed that part 2 will be later this year. I think he wants to cement Model 3 as the car to have for those still thinking of maybe getting a Bolt.

The "obvious thing" he mentions is full autonomy.

So it looks like "Two Camps" of thought shaping up.....

One being the Second Reveal late this year (2016) :)

And

Two being the Second Reveal this time next year (2017)....or late Spring/early-mid Summer 2017.

I like late this year which would drum up excitement for 6 months prior to opening of the Design Studio and 'Ordering and Optioning" if deliveries are to in fact start "Mid to Late 2017" as Elon has eluded to.

"The obvious thing" has to do with autopilot. The exact issue, and what will be said are not as obvious as ELon seems to think (given all the disagreement on it). If Tesla has fully autonomous driving capability now, why wouldn't they release it on the Model S? If they don't, how can they know when they will have it?

Thank you kindly.

They don't have it now, it's not finished yet. They can use the second reveal for the Model 3 to show what they have achieved so far and implement it in due time with updated Model S and Xm, assuming the software is ready, before Model 3 is ready. They won't be holding back technology for the 3 if it can be done on the Model S prior. They just want to use the Model 3 as the demonstrator as it has the most eyes on it at the moment.

Don't know about the Full autonomy. There are so many regulatory hurtles that even if Tesla thought it was ready, the US govt might not allow it. That is my opinion of course, but I would be surprised to see it go beyond what is available now in the Model S.

As far as the 2nd Reveal, I would hope they would try to do it just before the BOLT launch and steal any PR that GM may try to make. I originally thought it would be in March but since ELON said later this year, I guess it will be, but as far as full pricing, IDK.

I'm sure the Model ☰ will have all the hardware it needs for full autonomy. Then we'll see a gradual phase in of new features as the software is developed, and the various governments around the world permit it. All of that could take several years.

A second event to steal the Bolt launch would be hilarious. I hope that happens, and Elon reveals the interior then, but I think pricing details will wait until next year.

Speculate with me here...If I order a MS and it is produced in Sept....and the M3 reveal is in Sept...and the reveal says Full Autonomy is coming on the M3 in 2017. And that the M3 AP is tested first on the MS ---did you just say my Sept MS will be wired for APv2?

Keep in mind, when I say full autonomy I mean demonstratred. That's not the same as "available". Tesla has always mentioned autonomy as being pending to regulations that could trail the technology by 1-2years. Regulators will want lots of data to prove it's x-times safer than a regular driver. This is why Tesla is gathering as much data from the cars as possible to they have something in hand to give them as soon as they feel ready to deploy. Hopefully this will speed the process along as far as they are concerned.

They will show it first on the Model 3 so they don't spill the beans for that car if they were to first show it on the Model S. The updated AP hardware can then be put into Model S pretty much right away so a software update push will ready for those for whatever level Tesla is aiming for (at least 3 but probably 4). When the 3 is ready it will have the AP hardware and a software update will enable it for that car as well.

Timing for the software updates will surely be after the Model 3 is actually in production, most likely sometime in 2018-2019

So revealing it later this year is not exactly 'obvious'.

Well, Lane keeping requires hands on the wheel at all times from a regulatory standpoint. Full autonomy in a car could be the same. So regulations aren't limiting what Tesla can put in the car, just what they can say about it, and what you can do with it.

Thank you kindly.

You just snapped my head...I thought the MS would be the leading horse with hardware/software and trickle down to the little brother. You just said M3 will be the emerging tech? So that means the next 18 months of MS production will be leapfrogged by the new kid on the block? Did I read that right?
And I see hardware being built a long time before finished software is released- on either MS or M3. I'm trying to jump into a MS and don't want to close the hardware door too soon.
Tell me you missed inserting a (won't) in this sentence -
They will show it first on the Model 3

What I meant to say is that the new autopilot hardware and software will be demonstrated on Model 3 later this year at the second reveal but since Model S and X are currently in production, any hardware advances will be put on those first. The software however will be pushed out as they make improvements like they always have.

Tesla has always said they won't hold back any technology just for the Model 3. They already make improvements to the cars as they go. Model X got the new HEPA filter and new nose before Model S did...

TrevP - I want to ask some questions about the MS60 battery. Surely there is a thread where charging and discharging has been discussed ad-nausium, but I can't find said link...so ask your help in not contaminating this thread, but getting into the right now. Thanks

It is not entirely infeasible for Tesla to keep improving the hardware and loading it on vehicles before activating it. That's been consistent practice. However, I would hasten to guess that full autonomous hardware would not be installed until AP 2.0 at least... However, don't listen to Elon. For those hints. He sets the vision, execution sometimes lags.

For example a lot of the things he described on AP during the D launch (where AP was the "something else") won't be on until 2.0. And I don't know if anyone remembers the tweet about using Summon from New York to get your car from Los Angeles... Like I said previously, Vision... Execution will follow.

There is a section here for S... Start a thread there and folks will answer it.
