I was reading and thinking about this whole 1 display that Elon is mentioning and thinking how can it be one 15" display and a HUD. Then I watched the test drives again from the launch even and the drivers said that they are sticking with this layout but not that the screen will stay. Also I was thinking about who would supply this HUD? Panansonic? LG let slip that they are the sole supplier for the 15" screen of the model 3. Unlike the model S & X which was a different supplier and tilted towards the driver. I put all this together and came up with a new theory.

LG also makes HUD's and has advertised this since 2012 or so. But here comes transparent LCD/E-ink/OLED's. Flexible displays and do you see where I am going with this.

1- display, a 15" OLED flexible display stuck on the windscreen.

Now the question would be if it needs to be in front of the driver or middle between the seats. Or two mirrored displays one for each but running the same info.

It would be very easy to install (plug in cable, glue). Futuristic like a space ship.

I don't think so.
  • It won't replace the center console display. You need touchscreen controls, otherwise you end up with some sort of universally-hated abomination of a user interface, such as BMW's idrive control. The windscreen is too far away for touching, and you don't want fingerprint smudges all over it.
  • I'm hoping Tesla's HUD will encompass the full width of the windscreen. This will be needed if they actually are planning on augmented reality features, such as showing GPS turning directions overlayed on the roads themselves.

i think if we end up having a HUD (which, personally fully expect will happen some time - hopefully by the time of the Model ☰), it will project directly onto the windshield plus the center console screen.
Melinda, I like the updated signature :
Model☰ reserved 4.1.2016
Current daily driver: 2008 Pontiac Solstice GXP Turbo
Cost since reservation: Repairs = $897.04, Fuel+Oil = $1,174.57 Miles = 9,194

The center screen is staying, Tesla has confirmed this. What is unknown is if they're going to put autopilot information onto a secondary projection system like a HUD or augmented reality HUD.

One thing I do know is *if* they do indeed use a projection system to display AP and other info directly on the windshield they will need coatings to prevent ghost reflections. I know this because when you use one of those HUD apps on your iPhone you get a double-image of sorts from the inside and outside glass layers. Tesla has a glass R&D division with lots of experience with coatings now so it would make sense for them to have dealt with this issue if it comes true.

PS. Electrek reported last year that LG had the contract for the center LCD display in the Model 3

Like the rest of you I'm routing for augmented reality and I think that is the direction this is going. I have posted this somewhere before but there is a company that is making a HUD called "Skyscreen". I think they are still in prototype phase. These are the only 2 videos I could find about it. It looks like it would be a decent alternative if Tesla doesn't go with augmented reality just yet. The promo video is pretty ridiculous but it gives a good idea what it may be like. Its hard to tell, almost anything can be made to look cool on video. The other video was pretty informative on how they go about doing it.

From what exactly, @Badback ? ;)

Actually, on a more serious note, this does look pretty cool, with almost too many possibilities, not totally devoid of risk of distraction... after all there is only so much you need to see on the windscreen while driving...

Ah, the tempestual allure of G-Forces acting upon voluminous breas-t-tt-s-sss (as David Alan Grier might say). I, too, would like to meet Lucy. She has a very nice... Smile. :D

As for the technology... Seems pretty cool. Instead of projection or reflection it is a flexible film with OLED elements built into it. So it can be bright and crisp while also being transparent. I like the idea, and I would love to see it implemented across the entire interior surface of a windshield.

Yeah, if they do a HUD, it needs to be a lot more elegant than just splashing a traditional binnacle up in front of your face.
I'm dying for a HUD, but I would NOT buy the one in that first video. It's just vomiting up a binnacle in front of your face, rather than augmenting your view in subtle and helpful ways. Ugh.
Also, as of today I don't think we're getting a HUD (optional OR standard) in Model 3 at release. I think it'll get introduced in the S at some point, then in the Model 3 down the road. Unless he's just trying to support S/X sales in Q1 and Q2, he's been signalling that "we've already seen Model 3," and "There's just one screen," and "Model S will be the technology leader."
I'm a yuge fan of HUDs. But I don't think we'll get one in July. Hope I'm wrong...
