How can I get extra key cards?
Can I order them and have them mailed to me or does the car have to be taken in to service center so cards can be programmed to the car?

I will be picking my new model 3 up this Saturday at 4 PM which is the same time the service center closes. I was told by a Tesla rep that keys can't be made till after I take delivery. I live over two hours drive from service center and do not want to have to drive back to pick up two extra keys.
Has anyone else had this problem. I will be calling service center tomorrow to discuss getting extra keys made when they prep the car for delivery.

Whoever told you have to wait until after delivery for extra keycards is mistaken. It's certainly not a corporate policy, anyway. I took delivery and requested an extra keycard (as well as a micro-USB cable) and both were waiting for me at delivery. The only uncertainty is cost, as the pricing seems to be all over the place. Some service centers charge labor for programming them, and some require to you to purchase them in pairs. Mine allowed me to buy a single one but did charge labor, so it ended up costing $30.

You'll definitely want to give your service center a call and let them know you'll be taking delivery on Saturday and want to place an order for an extra keycard. They should be able to take care of it for you and provide it to your delivery specialist.

And, congratulations on the pending delivery. You're going to love it!

Guessing it's different depending on where you're picking up your vehicle. I also asked my delivery coordinator and they told me they'd have to be provided by the SC. When I picked up the car at the Delivery Center I was told again I'd have to get them from the SC. I ended up taking the car in for service a week later and asked for 2 more keys. I was only charged $20. Apparently you can have up to 12

I was quoted $25 for 2 keys and told it would take 30! minutes to get them programmed. Someone with a mobile terminal should be able to come out to your car and do this in 1 minute, especially at delivery where you are already verified as the owner.

If you have a working key card and the app for 2FA, why can't you program your own keycards? Is it because a private key needs to be programmed into the card using an NFC writer?

The Fremont SC charged me just over $80 to add 3 cards. They asked a couple of times if I really wanted to have a total of 5 cards for the car.

I got 2 extra key cards at the Dedham Mass SC and it was $10 plus tax for the pair. Fortunately I was going that way, otherwise it would have been a 500-mile roundtrip. The mobile techs really need to be able to do this for customers.

wow that's incredible cheap compared to the model S and X complex keys. Though I did find out that the outer black shell of the key fobs are replaceable and good value.

The black official Tesla key card for your wallet is only $8? That seems incredibly cheap.
When I took delivery last June, I remember being they were $5 each at that time. I think it was also printed in the key card holder they gave me then. So yes, definitely affordable, even at $8. Nice to be able to give one to a guest who's staying over (or maybe not LOL!).

Others have been charged up to $100 previously, so with Tesla, nothing is official ;)
Those were more than likely key fobs for the S and X. If someone paid $100 for an M3 key card, they were taken for a ride. ;) M3 key cards have never been sold for $100.
