I live in N. Central MA and reserved in-store on 3/31/16.


I was holding out for AWD/Performance/Ludicrous, but "Production Hell" has me 99.999% sure I'm going to pull the trigger on "First Production".

Now, I'm just waiting got my Design Studio invite, so I can immediately configure and confirm...and so I can get an electrician over here to set up my home charging.

You can get the home charging setup anytime now. I have started getting quotes over the last few days and should have my Nema 14-50 installed within the next 2 weeks or so!

I was holding off, just in case there were any surprises on that side. But it's probably safe to get it now.

Welcome! I look forward to watching how much sooner you get your 3 before me here in MA. At the moment it looks like reserving less than a day later cost me three more months of waiting!

I imagine it will slip to the right.....

but these days, it seems like anything can happen. Maybe when the East Coast's number is called, lots of people defer until Dual Motors and I end up getting it early (as in sometime in November).

We have our annual Christmas trip to the in-laws' in central Virginia, and I'd LOVE to have it by then.

Welcome! Glad to see you over here. If you do end up going with First Production and get your Model 3 prior to your VA trip, I think your early-adopter insights will prove invaluable for the other northeasterners here. Questions on my mind include:

(1) How well does a RWD Model 3 perform in New England winter weather?
(2) What is the trip down I-95 like with the 310-mile battery in colder weather? (I have in-laws in DC that we visit annually as well.)
(3) How do the 19" wheels fare vs. your typical pothole minefield?

I'll happily hit the "Hold my Place" button when my turn comes up, though you reserved an hour ahead of me so it may not affect your delivery date...

You hear that, everyone? Model 3 test rides during the first weekend of December at the newly-opened Leominster supercharger! ;) I'll bring coffee and donuts... neither of which will be allowed within 20 feet of the vehicle, of course...

Neither set of tires does particularly well in their winter rating......but the 18s are slightly better.


My plan of attack here may be to go with the 18s on delivery, and assess my situation and maybe do something a little fancier in the summer. (19s, performance-rated)

Few thoughts for you....

Why not upgrade to 19s. You won't get a better rim for $1500.

Then get cheaper aftermarket rims for the winter.

I imagine that's cheaper overall.

You said the tires on the 18s don't handle winter well, so it sounds like you need to buy new tires for them to allow them to be winter wheels and then you need to buy new 19s + tires.

Seems like that's an opportunity to upgrade to the 19s and they'll come with tires that work in the non winter months. Then you'd buy cheaper / smaller rims for the winter.

Probably worth running the numbers on both scenarios anyway.

Neither size tire/wheel conmbo is particularly great. however, the OEM 18's are actually better in the snow.

I'd end up buying a 19" Summer set......

You want as small a tire as possible for snow. Small width to cut through and high sidewall. Go with the 18s if you don't plan to buy separate wheels for the snow.
But you are much better off getting separate wheels for the snow, cheap ones that you don't mind not washing all winter and getting grimey, and even smaller size.
Depending on space around the brakes etc you can probably go down to 17. Tire rack will eventually have this info, and no doubt will be in the forums even sooner.

I used to run 15" nokians in the snow, boy they were incredible.

the continental you've linked to isn't correct. Tesla is using a Continental 'ProContact', not a Continental 'ContiProContact'.
