Does VIN equate to build date?

I’m thrilled to be taking deliver in ~10 days, but I’m slightly concerned with the 194XX VIN I was given. It’s weird that people are getting VINs in the 25k and up range, and mine is so “low” right about the time they started adding new seats.

I just want to make sure that my car will have the new enhancements ... front and back seats 2.0 and wind noise reductions.

Are VINs assigned sequentially? I asked the delivery specialist when the car was manufactured but she couldn’t tell me.

I know I’m probably worried about nothing. But what do you guys think?

That sounds too conspiratorial. I think your tin-foil hat fell off. ;)

The answer is much simpler. There's no single production line. Different phases of production will have 1 or several similar lines running in parallel. Elon has already told us that there were 2 (and now 3) general assembly lines. So, think about what happens when one of the lines at one of those stages needs to be temporarily shut down. That line has some partially-completed cars on it. They're going to sit there not making progress, while the other lines can continue. If those stages have large/important car parts stamped with VINs, then the VINs end up being produced out of order.

And even when a car has gone completely through the production line, some of the cars require rework, which will also cause those cars to be completed out of order.

Hey rvyayyy, I assume you have picked up your car by now. Can you tell if you have the new seats and the wind reduction? I am picking mine up tomorrow in Tysons and my VIN is 224XX which seems very low for July 21 delivery. The Monroney sticker indicates a June 2018 manufacture but I am worried this car was started in March/April and put aside for rework with final completion in June but possibly with March/April internals. I have asked my Tesla rep if they have more info about the manufacture history of this car but I haven't heard back yet. I am excited about tomorrow after waiting for sooooo long but because of the VIN I am also a bit anxious/nervous.

I have picked it up. It’s been 2.5 great weeks! The car and myself were actually just in Tyson’s this morning. I love Autopilot I’m all that stop and go traffic.

But you had a different question... :)

Yes, mine was also manufactured 06/18 with its “low” vin. I do have the new front and rear seats.

I’m not sure about wind noise reduction. I have nothing to compare it to other than my 12 year old beater. But it sounds pretty quiet to me.

Fit and finish in mine is excellent. No major defects I could find. However, I did just notice that my drivers side “signature” light strip is non functional. You might want to check for that. It appears to be popping up on the forums as an issue.

Thanks for this info, I'm picking mine up Aug 3 and the VIN is 35XXX when most people seem to be in the 40s and some 50s even. How do I tell if it has the gen2 seats?

It's awesome!!! The car appears flawless to me. It has the gen 2 seats, panel gaps are perfect... I can't find anything wrong with it :)

I do have one minor (and fleeting) complaint. The delivery was subpar. The delivery specialist was great so no complaints there but after watching plenty of photos and videos of people taking delivery, this was nothing like it. To be honest, the main problem was the monsoon conditions we had yesterday in NoVA. I figured the weather wouldn't be an issue because the deliveries are always inside. I've even seen photos of the delivery area at the Tyson's location. They have a 3 bay delivery area. But unfortunately, my car was simply sitting outside in the monsoon so I really didn't get the chance to look it over the way I wanted. I wasn't the only one taking delivery outside. I assume they just had too many people. The odd thing is they said they had canceled a lot of the deliveries that day due to issues with their computer system for people who were paying by loan so I figured that would have opened up the inside. Oh well. I ended up driving over to a parking garage to get a better look and it looks perfect so in the end I have no complaints.

I can't believe how fun it is to drive. I'll be taking it to the beach in NC next weekend and to Clemson in August to drop my son off at school. It's going to be great!
