Center Screen and Air Bag?

Is it just me (probably) or does the current mounting of the center screen create challenges to effective air bag deployment? With all the exposed edges and corners, it makes me think that there might be an alternative to the current mounting of the screen in the works. Possibly some sort of integration into a reworked center console or dash? Am I overthinking this? Just seems like in a collision from the front right of the car, it would be very difficult to protect the driver from the left corner/edge of the screen as mounted.

Thoughts?

I think they can design an airbag to work with it.

I'm more worried about people accidentally banging themselves or their stuff into it. That's going to put a lot of torque on the mount, and I'm afraid that we're going to see some of these displays being broken. Time will tell.

I don't think it's an issue. Based on everything Elon has said recently combined with comments by engineers at the reveal event I'm pretty convinced the interior we saw is indeed what we are getting. Screen position and all.

There's not enough time between the reveal event and "pencils down" in mid July 2016 (3.5 months) to make drastic changes. This is the first time we've seen a Tesla prototype that was 99% of what we are getting. The program was already well underway and accelerated at that stage. People had better get used to what we've seen so far is what is going to be in your driveway.

I saw the center console on the prototype with all the storage bins. @TrevP , do you think those were functional?

also the cup holders looked like they were filled in and place holders for the actual cup holders.

Both of these probably need some tweeking don't you think?

Well, you guys know that when you're in an accident your arms go all over the place. If you have you arm on the center arm rest. In a frontal impact you're going to be punching that screen.

My arms are attached to my hands, and my hands would be clutching the steering wheel during an accident. When I drive, passengers have a tendency to hold on for dear life. So not much chance their arms would be flailing about during an accident, unless they were trying to strangle me at the time.

That would be a perfect situation. Not everyone drives with both hands. And sometimes accidents happen without knowing. Just saying

  1. If I'm not punching a screen, then I'm punching a radio faceplate, or climate conrol knobs, etc. What's the difference?
  2. The front airbags are likely to cover the screen

I am wondering about how we know what speed we are doing? There was talk about HUD but no comments for some time. In Australia the remake of the famous "Mini" by BMW had to have an extra speedometer added to be in front of the driver. If there is no HUD then it would be the screen which would not be acceptable to Australian authorities as I understand it.

We will see on friday... but I doubt it. The production vehicles spotted so far have no indication of any central speedometer. And there's even this from the same Twitter thread as above:

My point is simple, based on the BMW mini precedent, Tesla will NOT be able to legally sell a single Model 3 in Australia.

Let me take that back a bit.

@Winemaker01 is probably correct - Mini had to move the speedometer from the central binnacle to above the steering wheel to appease Australian authorities. The difference here may be that the Prius - while it has its speedometer in the central binnacle - placed the speedometer right beside the steering wheel. But we know that Tesla is also putting the speedometer right beside the steering wheel. So Tesla should also be ok to sell the Model 3 in Australia with no additional instrumentation.

The picture of the center screen (above) caused me to wonder ..... will advertisers purchase space and display ads on the screen? That may sound like a silly question, but EVERYTHING else in life (TV, computer, Smart phone, youtube, Facebook) have advertisements constantly popping up. On my computer I have appearing I constantly get notices to cancel ad blocking software that I have installed.

The very last thing I want are ads appearing on my console.
