I know a lot of you aren't positive on color or wheels, as I was. I was on the fence about the wheels, and went with the sport wheels when I received my invite and was forced to make a decision in order to secure my spot in line. Immediately after, I started second guessing my decision and now ultimately want the aero wheels. The issue is that there is no way to change your configuration online. In fact, the only thing mentioning changing says that it could impact your delivery date and you may get a fee:

I won't change if either of those things were going to happen, but I can't find anyone to even talk to me about the process. The only number provided for "immediate assistance" is just Tesla's phone number. When I went through the options and finally talked to someone, I was told that they could not change my options, I needed to talk to my local delivery specialist, and gave me his name and number. The number they gave me was disconnected. Luckily, I had dealt with the guy before, so found his email and phone number in my emails. I called and left him a message, his VM said he'd get back to me in 24 hours. I didn't hear back from him, so I emailed. He responded pretty quickly, but said he would need to get an answer for me because he wasn't handling Model 3's yet. I followed up a couple days later because I hadn't heard anything. He responded that someone from the Model 3 Team was supposed to contact me. I haven't heard anything since then.

I know we are in the early hours of the first-non-employee invites, and that there are issues for Tesla to iron out. I am confident that Tesla ultimately will make this process easier and more streamlined. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up, so that anyone that is expecting an invite soon finalized their config decisions before hand so that you don't run into potential added fees, delayed deliveries, and maybe even not being able to change your configuration, if you change your mind.

Update 12/1/17 6:20 PM ET: Well, good news! I just got a call from Tesla from someone saying a VIN hadn't been assigned yet, so they could make the change, with no delay and no fee. He could not give me any update as to when I'd get the car.

I really have no doubts on my configuration.

First Production (long range + premium)
Midnight Silver
Sport Wheels

The only thing, if anything, is Enhanced Autopilot. I am going to keep working on my wife to try to convince her. Now I suspect if at the last minute I want EAP, I can work with the delivery specialist to get it for $5,000 and simultaneously not delay my delivery, but that's really my only question mark!

I know it's no consolation but you could 'trade' with another expected Model 3 owner, have them get the aero wheels if they want the sport and you do a swap (with $$ for the difference obviously).

Regarding the configuration, mine is set in stone and has been for months. All down to finances and what the wife is willing to allow, SR, PUP, Red and Aero (no EAP or FSD).

If anyone in SF or LA wants to upgrade (who has their car before me), let me know!

I would but for a few small issues...

... not able to upgrade to the Sport (keeping the wife happy)
... not getting it until "mid 2018" due to no LR (also keeping the wife happy)

Other than that you have a deal ;)

(would you take an '06 corolla set of wheel instead?!?! - jk)

Not allowed to get blue since my wife’s Model X is blue...

Are your wives going to let you enjoy the cars at all or do you just have to park them and wait until you're given permission to use them? :D

Most smart men make their wives happy. Happy wife/Happy life. I wanted a red car anyway....
I decided the smart move was that I'm never proposing. If my girlfriend doesn't like the car I'm ordering or the color I order it in, she can drive separately or whatever. My money, my choice.

Well, good news! I just got a call from Tesla from someone saying a VIN hadn't been assigned yet, so they could make the change, with no delay and no fee. He could not give me any update as to when I'd get the car.

I'm going to update the first post accordingly.

I probably don’t need to tell you, but it’s worth getting it in an email or other form of writing, just so that if you turn up and there are the 19” on, you have something to show that it’s their mistake. Not that it would eve happen of course;)

As an aside, you:
  • Had no delivery contact
  • Phoned the best number you could, and got given a delivery specialist number that was wrong.
  • Had previous contact with Delivery Specialist, so rang and left voicemail, no reply.
  • Emailed said specialist who replied saying he would find out.
  • Emailed said specialist again, since no update. He said other team would contact.
  • No contact again...

...and then finally contacted and all happy in the end. Tesla *have* to start sorting this out. Lack of contact is endemic and so so common. There’s no reason or excuse for it.

Yes, I got a follow up email. I agree on the contact, but being one of the first non-employees, I’m being understanding.

i see nothing interesting in the 19'' wheels either. you can get these kind of standard wheel everywhere. it's a silver wheel. wow.
but the Tesla Hub Caps is unique and functional (range gain). so if Tesla is not going to sell them separately think about the 19'' upgrade twice ;)

I guess this is why they make different things to match our different tastes. I think the 19” wheels are stunning :)

I wouldn't select them even if they were the same cost. Aesthetically alone, they do nothing for me, much less their impact on performance. I don't see the appeal, but it obviously hits the sweet spot for some.
