His previous posts make it look like he may have bought a Model S at some point. It doesn't matter if you were an owner or not at the time of reservation. If you bought one later, it has the same effect as owning one at the time of reservation as far as anyone can tell.

I’m more intrigued by the part where they reference being called right away about delivery fast.

Assuming it’s true — that’s pretty cool!
While I don't know about this particular case as the whole non-owner is somewhat odd, they are definitely trying to move cars quickly. I just configured on the 19th and when I talked to my delivery specialist yesterday he was asking if I could take delivery yet this year until he noticed my address was in Iowa... Had I been doing a Fremont pickup I probably could have picked it up this year.

Probably is a waste at this point but a CPO S is $1K and a new S is $2,500.

I had a similar experience where I received owner priority for my Model 3 reservation before I actually had the keys to my CPO Model S. I didn't take delivery of the CPO S until August 2017 but made my Model 3 reservation in April 2017. They gave me owner priority while the process was still progressing. In my opinion, it is all still a mystery regarding how they are sending out invites.

1k for CPO.

I’d happily pay $1k to get the car 3 months early, assuming I’d be comparing against the ass end of my delivery estimate, which is probably optimistic.

If the Jan-mar would *definitely* happen it’s one thing, but who knows?

Being in CA probably puts you toward the front end of an estimate, so if this strategy were to work it’s probably not a huge time saver.

Maybe.... I think they’re more likely to stick me with an “end of quarter quality” special, if anything. as long as i have enough notice to get to the bank and grab the title to my trade in I can take delivery same-day, so I’m ideal for that.

I’m CA first day line stander (#5 in line) non-owner. My delivery estimate is Dec-Feb. Dec is out, and it definitely looks like Jan is out as well.

Feb would be nice.

So I’m clearly not toward the front end of the estimate. If there weren’t any progress I would seriously consider throwing $1k away on a CPO deposit, but with the Iowa owner getting her invite email last week (and half of all Tesla’s reportedly being owned in CA), I don’t think my invite is far enough out to spend $1k to jump a month or 2 in line.
