@Mad Hungarian tweeted a photo from his Fremont factory tour that shows some large earth moving equipment on site.

He'll have a report soon on his trip but he says they were mum on the activity going on.

I'm sure Tesla is prepping for an imminent factory expansion for Model 3

This is good, if not early, news on the plant expansion. Although, I had the distinct impression that the plant has a lot of room inside that hasn't been fully utilized yet. Also, Elon spoke about using the volume of the factory more efficiently. So I would be surprised if they needed more space at the Fremont factory.

He said it was on the Fremont factory tour so it was on their grounds. This application isn't showing the factory as far as I can see.

That makes more sense than expanding the factory for the model 3 production given Elon's comments with regards to increasing the efficiency of the existing plant.

How did you come across that document?
Googled something like "fremont, ca tesla permit construction"
also the Fremont2 Supercharger site that has been in some state of construction for a year - with local users on TMC looking in the windows and reporting the building is currently being used for parts storage

It is not on the factory site, but a tesla property across the street to the south.

Hello all!
Sorry for not checking in sooner but it's been a busy trip, to say the least.
The 47400 Kato st. location is indeed Tesla's new Service Center just down the road from the factory (good find Melinda!). Our secret Tesla host took us there as an extended part of our visit to the factory and surrounding areas. I had tweeted a photo showing the Great Wall Of Superchargers (20 of 'em!) being set up there.
So then what's the deal with the heavy equipment we saw out back of the factory? To Paul's point, there is definitely a large amount of unused space inside the existing structures of the Freemont plant that can be used for the Model 3 ramp up. It's been pointed out many times that Toyota and GM had no problem cranking out 500,000 cars per year out of this facility, so it's no stretch to believe Tesla can hit that in the same space. And if I recall correctly, the new factory paint line has a capacity of - you guessed it - 500,000 cars per year. Until the Q1 earnings call this year that was the stated target for this factory, so everything made sense. But now that they've upped the goal to 1,000,000 cars per year by 2020, so something somewehere's gotta give. Of course we've recently heard a lot of emphasis from Elon about optimizing factory density in all 3 axis to increase output from the same structural volume, so I'm sure that figures large in how they're going to get a million cars out of Freemont. But you have to figure that there's still going to be at least a few extra structures added. I'll be very curious to see what this one is!
Gotta catch our flight home, will try to write a full trip report in the next few days.

Digging some more came up with a North Paint building expansion to the north under permit# 2016-06676
or more accurately, a $2.8M foundation permit #2016-04165, page 720, issued in April that references the building permit (which I presume has not been issued yet, because can not find it).
and another mention of it on a development review agenda from May:
"To consider a concurrent Design Review Permit and Building Permit to allow a 28,000 sq. ft. expansion to the north side of the North Paint Building located at 45500 Fremont Blvd in the South Fremont Community Plan Area."

With investigative skills like yours, we should know when to expect the delivery of our M3s will be. :)

You are too kind sir. And yes, few things beat a good Tesla geek-out session over prime rib. At least I'm on my way to advancing one good planetary cause. Once they the get the whole transport/energy thing sorted here and the second home on Mars happening, I vote Elon and co. figure out a way to to make a sustainable (and of course even better) steak!

P.S.: I SWEAR I will finish that factory tour piece over the holidays. Really ;)
